A Personal Journey to Functional Medicine

Dr. Rowley’s path to functional medicine began with a life-changing health crisis. At 20, while studying abroad in Japan, she suddenly began losing vision in her right eye and had to be medically evacuated back to the United States. Though IV steroids restored her vision, doctors had no explanation for what happened.

Ten years later, the episode repeated, and this time an MRI revealed the diagnosis: Multiple Sclerosis. Rather than accept a lifetime of managing symptoms, Dr. Rowley entered medical school just one month after her diagnosis, determined to understand how to prevent disease progression.

Finding Her Calling

“I found what I was looking for in Functional Medicine,” Dr. Rowley explains. Using functional medicine principles on herself, she hasn’t experienced MS symptoms in over 18 years since her diagnosis. Remarkably, the markers of disease in her labs and imaging studies continue to decrease or disappear entirely.

Education & Expertise

Dr. Rowley earned her medical degree at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and completed her family medicine residency at the University of Texas at Houston. She is both board-certified in family medicine and a Certified Practitioner of the Institute for Functional Medicine—a dual certification that allows her to seamlessly integrate conventional and functional approaches.
